The Educator’s Word Frequency Guide represents a quantitative summary of the printed vocabulary encountered by students in American schools. Created from 60,527 samples of text from over 6,000 textbooks, works of literature, and popular works of fiction and nonfiction, it is one of the largest systematic word frequency studies ever completed.

In addition to the overall word frequency counts, separate word frequency counts were conducted on materials for each grade (grade 1 through college). These grade-level counts provide a window on the changing frequency of use of individual words across the grades. As such, they offer useful clues as to when students are likely to encounter particular words, and are helpful in designing instructional materials tailored to the age and educational progress of students.
